Cercis siliquastrum (Fabaceae), known as "erguvan" in Türkiye, is a deciduous shrub or tree that is widely distributed in our country. Its flowers bloom before the leaves, are pink, and are in clusters [1]. The flowers are used for various purposes in traditional medicine. In Iraq, Iran, and Syria, the use of flowers in respiratory system disorders is prominent. In our country, the flowers are also used externally in the form of an infusion for itching and insect bites [2-5]. This study aimed to determine the anatomical and micromorphological characteristics for identifying herbal drugs from C. siliquastrum and to elucidate the essential oil composition. Powdered drug preparations were prepared using distilled water, chloral hydrate, and Sartur reagents and examined under a light microscope. Flower surface morphology was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The composition of essential oil obtained from dried flower samples by hydrodistillation was analyzed using the GC-MS method. As a result of the powder drug analysis, anomocytic stomata, trichomes, druse and simple crystals, oil drops, and nectary tissues in the calyx epidermis, anomocytic stomata in the corolla epidermis, trichomes in the filament epidermis, and tricolpate pollens were identified as characteristic anatomical elements. SEM examinations confirmed the micromorphological characteristics of these structures. The essential oil obtained is white in color and has a waxy texture. In GC-MS analysis, the main compounds were identified as n-heneicosane (11.95%), n-hexacosan (9.96%), and 6,10,14-trimethyl-pentadecan-2-one (7.37%). Oxygenated monoterpenes were detected in low amounts, with linalool (0.23%) and α-terpineol (0.07%) being the main representatives. In conclusion, the identified anatomical, micromorphological, and phytochemical characteristics provide distinctive features for the identification and standardization of C. siliquastrum flower drugs.
