The Paleo diet assumes that human biology was shaped through millions of years of evolutionary processes and is therefore incompatible with modern lifestyles. Initially developed as a dietary regimen that excludes grains to control appetite and regulate the body, this approach has, over time, been infused by some commentators with a nostalgic vision of a “golden age,” evolving into a broader critique of civilization—namely, the Paleo movement. Thus, what began as a mere dietary preference has gradually transformed into an ideological way of life centered on the ideal of returning to nature, body, performance, self-discipline, and normative gender roles. This article examines the discourses of the Paleo movement through a critical discourse analysis, using John Durant’s The Paleo Manifesto (2013) as a primary source. Its central argument is that the Paleo movement transcends dietary practice to propose a lifestyle infused with conservative and neoliberal values, articulated through a critique of civilization and a reconstruction of gender roles. While Durant’s manifesto calls for a biological restoration of human nature, it simultaneously offers a social imaginary that rejects the universalist ideals of modernity. This vision, closely aligned with Alt-Right thought, includes elements such as the naturalization of inequality, the reestablishment of traditional gender roles, and the glorification of hypermasculinity. In this context, the Paleo movement functions not only as a dietary model, but also as a site of metapolitical intervention that reinforces right-wing ideologies through normative frameworks shaped around the body, nature, and social roles. The article explores how the Paleo approach comes into conflict with feminism, vegetarianism/veganism, and demands for social equality. Accordingly, the study aims to reveal how the Paleo narrative intersects with right-wing populist and misogynistic discourses, and to analyze the ideological affinities it establishes with conservative and neoliberal values at the level of discourse.
