Özet

Tafsir or commentary, in general terms, is the interpretation of the Qur’an or the verses of the Qur’an considering various data. Although there are many books of commentary known as tafsir interpreting the Qur'an, there is no established tradition of illustrating the Qur'an from the beginning of Islam to nowadays in Islamic culture. Aside from a single Qur'an manuscript containing five depictions that interpret specific verses from various surahs, illustrations of Qur'an manuscripts are not seen in Islamic civilization. In contrast, there are many examples of the use of images with texts, including Quranic verses. However, visual depictions that directly interpret specific verses remain limited in number. The painting we will examine here is an example from a manuscript of the Falnâme, which was prepared in the last quarter of the 16th century and registered in the Topkapı Palace Museum Library with the number of Hazine 1702. Many details about the Day of Judgment are included in the example of the picture, which begins with the verse "Your Lord will surely send people who will inflict the worst torment on them until the Day of Judgment" (Araf 7/167) at the top of the page. This study will discuss the combined use of Qur’anic verses and images and examine how the concept of Doomsday described in the verse is depicted in the image. It would not be wrong to think of the verse and the picture coming together and the picture as a visual interpretation of the verse. In the picture, subjects of various visuals such as Judgment Day, list of bad and good acts known as amal notebook, the angel Israfel whispering the trumpet known as sur, pool of Kavsar, mizan, hell, Paradise, and the angel Malik are included. These elements in the image that explains the verse, along with their specific details, can be seen to have parallels in Islamic sources. The study will also reveal how all these images and the details within them, which explain the verse, are presented in Islamic sources.
