Özet

Today, achieving zero emission target is among the top priorities of the countries in efforts to reduce greenhouse

gases, especially carbon emissions. The places with the highest carbon emissions are urban areas, and especially the

construction and operation energy use related to buildings accounts for 40% of carbon emissions worldwide. Green

building approaches are one of the leading solutions to reduce environmental pollution and energy consumption. The

goal of green buildings is to leave a clean and beautiful environment for the future. In this context, they are buildings

that give importance to issues such as efficient use of energy in buildings, waste management (recycling, refunctioning,

etc.), water consumption and the use of environmentally friendly materials. It is of great importance that

the buildings of many educational institutions in our country are designed and constructed according to the green

building concept. Especially rapidly aging and increasingly inefficient buildings can lead to unnecessary carbon

emissions and high electricity bills. It is foreseen that a large part of the school building stock in our country will be

renovated or transformed. The goal of green buildings is to leave a clean and beautiful environment for the future,

including the efficient use of energy in buildings, waste management (recycling, re-functioning, etc.), water

consumption and the use of environmentally friendly materials. Less waste, less energy, comfort and health, which

are three important criteria in shaping the green building character, are also predominantly included in green

building certificates. In order for a building to be considered a green building, it must meet certain standards (green

building certification systems used in different countries; LEED, BREAM, GREEN STAR, CASBEE etc.). The main

objectives of a sustainable (green) building can be summarised as efficient use of energy, minimisation of health and

safety risks, active use of resources, reduction of waste, flexible and adaptable to changing conditions, long-lasting

building structure, healthy indoor air quality, protection of clean water supply, avoidance of hazardous and harmful

substances, protection of biodiversity, etc. In this study, the concept and standards of green building will be explained,

and in addition, determinations will be made, and recommendations will be made for green building standards that

include environmentally friendly, less energy-consuming sustainable building designs of existing educational institutions buildings. Although there are many research and studies on green building designs, there are not many  studies on the transformation of thousands of inefficient old buildings into sustainable green buildings in our country. This study will provide a basis for the sustainable transformation of existing educational buildings.
