Performance and Environmental Assessment of Hydrogen Supply in Jet A-1 Fueled Turbojet Engine

Özet

In this study, the effects of increasing rates of hydrogen (H2) addition to Jet A-1 fuel on engine

performance, exhaust emissions, efficiency and environmental/social costs were investigated

experimentally on a small-scale turbojet engine (JetCat P80-SE). The experiments were carried out at

different H2 flow rates between 0 and 200 L/min at a constant engine speed of 40,000 rpm. According

to the results obtained, H2 addition increased the engine efficiency by providing an increase of nearly

70% in the specific power value of the engine, especially at low and medium rates, and at the same

time, it significantly reduced the total fuel consumption and power-specific fuel consumption. While

the exhaust temperature increased at low rates, it remained constant or decreased at high rates. With

the addition of H2, a continuous decrease was achieved in CO, CO2 and HC emissions, while a slight

increase was observed in NOx emissions at the beginning, but this increase decreased as the H2 energy

fraction in the total fuel increased. Combustion efficiency increased from 98.3% to 99.1%, while

significant reductions in environmental costs, especially in carbon-based components, were achieved.

The findings show that H2, when used as an additive fuel with Jet A-1, not only improves engine

performance but also environmental sustainability.
