Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of heavy earth-moving machinery, specifically shovels and draglines, at the West Lignite Coal Mine in Turkey, using Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and the Production Equipment Effectiveness (PEE) for the first time. The primary objective is to enhance production rates, improve equipment utilization, and reduce unit production costs through more effective equipment management. OEE values observed in the study ranged from 0.11% to 43.01%, indicating significant variability and potential inefficiencies in machine use. PEE method, which were applied to shovels and draglines for the first time, values ranged between 10.47% and 75.69%, highlighting opportunities for substantial performance improvements. The novelty of this research lies in the dual focus on production quality and operational performance, aiming to achieve high output rates at lower unit costs. By implementing PEE alongside OEE, this approach enables more accurate identification of production bottlenecks, supporting decision-making for performance optimization in large-scale surface mining operations.
