A socio-economic framework for net-zero emission: Insights from circular economy, energy transition and socio-political risk

Özet
As the European Union pursues its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, integrating different strategies has become crucial. Therefore, this study uses Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) and Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) pooled estimation techniques to examine the long-term impacts of the circular economy, energy transition, and ethnic tension on carbon emissions in G7 countries from 1990 to 2022. Our results indicate that adopting circular economy principles, such as resource efficiency and material reuse, generally reduces carbon emissions. Significant greenhouse gas reductions from technological advances within a circular framework support this finding. Ethnic tensions are positively associated with increased carbon emissions. This suggests that conflict and socio-political instability worsen environmental degradation. In contrast, energy transition is negatively associated with carbon emissions, highlighting its role in promoting environmental sustainability. Our findings emphasize the importance of promoting a circular economy, managing ethnic tensions, and advancing energy transition to achieve carbon neutrality and sustainable development goals.
