Özet

With the most common and known name, cape gooseberry is a perennial and shrubby form plant belonging to Solanaceae family and Physalis genus. The most known and cultivated variety is Physalis peruviana L. The cape gooseberry is a native plant of the Andes region. Besides it is rich in vitamins and polyphenols, the cape gooseberry stands out in terms of health-promoting and nutraceutical bioactive constituents. Among these substances, physalins and withanolides are the most common steroid-based phytocompounds. They have been mentioned as substances having antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, antitumor, hepatoprotective, and immunomodulatory effects. Cape gooseberry owes its strong aroma to compounds such as alcohols, lactones, esters, terpenes. Harvesting time is an important factor affecting the postharvest behavior of fruit. The maturity stage expressed with fruit and calyx color is directly linked with postharvest altitude. Due to its botanical structure, the fruits could be stored with or without calyx. Besides the protective effects of the calyx, it should be fully dry before wrapping it with any packaging material. Since it is a climacteric fruit and its respiration rate is relatively high, the ripening process occurs at an accelerated rate that reduces considerably its postharvest life. Thus cape gooseberry should be stored under conditions that delay ethylene production. Cape gooseberry fruits could be stored in both room and low temperatures, but low-temperature storage is more effective for the lasting shelf life of fresh fruits as expected. P. peruviana is a fruit that can be consumed directly, and can be consumed in products such as fruit juice, and jam, with proper processing. After harvesting, innovative packaging techniques must be developed to improve market opportunities, preserve quality characteristics, and extend shelf life.
