İsmet İnönü, who holds an important place in the political history of the Republic of Türkiye, served as both Prime Minister, President, and leader of the opposition. Throughout these roles, he served as a Member of Parliament for Malatya for nine terms. İnönü and the Republican People's Party (CHP), which were largely supported by the people of Malatya, held a strong political position in the province for many years. However, toward the late 1950s, this situation began to change, particularly with the establishment of the Fatherland’s Front (Vatan Cephesi) in 1958 under the leadership of the Democratic Party (DP), which notably affected the political balance in Malatya. The Fatherland’s Front, established at the call of the then Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, aimed to create a social front against the opposition and gained positive reception both nationwide and in Malatya. Resignations from the CHP occurred, with many people joining the DP and the Fatherland’s Front. The reasons for the public's shift away from the CHP are reflected in the expressions found in local media and official records. According to these records, the DP's tangible services, such as investments in roads, bridges, dams, factories, and healthcare, were highly appreciated by the public. The belief that these services, which the CHP had failed to implement for many years, were realized during the DP era influenced the preferences of the people of Malatya. Additionally, the affection felt for Menderes, who survived a plane crash, the successes in foreign policy, and the participation of influential figures from the region in the Fatherland’s Front also played a role in this political shift, as recorded. This study aims to reveal the impact of the Fatherland’s Front in Malatya and the dimensions of political polarization through telegrams and the local press of the time. The primary objective of this study is to determine to what extent Malatya, represented by İnönü, was affected by the political polarization during the Fatherland’s Front events and to explain the atmosphere of the period and the public's expectations through the example of Malatya.
