How does smart cities and digital economy facilitate energy security and energy transition? Empirical evidence from China

Özet
The present study investigates impacts of smart cities (SC), urbanization level (URB), innovation level (IL), Green total factor productivity (GTFP), level of financial development (FD) and digital economy (DE) on energy security (ES) and energy transition (ET) in China. Results of quantile on quantile regression (QQR) revealed that smart cities, urbanization level, innovation level, Green total factor productivity, level of financial development and digital economy have negative impacts on energy security across different quantile combination from moderate to high along side the increased quantiles. Energy transition experienced moderate to strong positive impacts of smart cities, urbanization level, innovation level, Green total factor productivity, level of financial development and digital economy over the increased quantiles (Tiwari et al., 2025). Furthermore, Cross-quantilogram plots reported the nonlinear dependence of energy security and energy transition on smart cities, urbanization level, innovation level, Green total factor productivity, level of financial development and digital economy. Overall it is found negative and positive dependence for the energy security and energy transition, respectively under lag 1, 2 and 4. Lastly, results of Wavelet-Quantile Regression (WQR) and Wavelet-Quantile Correlation (WQC) confirmed the robustnes of impacts and correlation between studied variables and found to be positive for energy transition and negative for enery security. Policy implications are suggested to China in order to foster energy security, energy transition and sustainable development.
