Evaluation of commercial and experimental socks designed for people with diabetes for their technical performance

Özet

Socks have been meticulously designed to support and maintain foot care during everyday movements and routine activities. For individuals living with diabetes, the selection of appropriate footwear and socks is essential for maintaining good foot health and avoiding foot wounds, infections and amputation. These garments keep the feet dry, prevent infections, reduce the risk of wounds, provide cushioning, and enhance blood circulation. Recently, a variety of commercial diabetic socks have emerged, with wide-ranging materials and designs making it challenging to understand performance effectiveness. This study analyses the performance of ten different commercially available socks alongside two experimental models developed with improved design features.

The socks were evaluated for physical parameters, stretch and recovery, durability, and thermal properties involving thermal resistance and conductivity. The study further examined breathability and moisture management along with the coefficient of friction. The performance of these socks was influenced by multiple factors, including fibre type, yarn quality, functional finishes, the percentage of elastic or elastane filaments utilised, and knit structure employed. The study advocates for an optimal configuration of physical parameters tailored explicitly for socks intended for individuals with diabetes. This approach aims to establish an ideal micro-environment that enhances diabetic foot care.
