The effect of age on ageism: The mediating role of the level of ignoring the informal productivity of older adults

Özet
This study aimed to determine the effect of participant’s age on ageism toward older adults and to examine the mediating effect of IIPOA in the relationship between age and ageism. Employing a descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational research design, the Fraboni Scale of Ageism and the newly developed Ignored Informal Productivity of the Older Adults Scale (IIPOA) were used. The findings revealed that as participants’ age increased, they were less likely to ignore the informal productivity of older adults and exhibited lower levels of ageism (ageism score M = 37.30, SD = 6.68; IIPOA score M = 17.14, SD = 5.90). When the IIPOA variable was included in the model, it was observed that the effect of participant’s age on ageism toward older adults was mediated. These results suggest that recognizing the informal productivity of older adults is associated with reduced ageism.
