Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a life-threatening disease particularly seen in premature and low-birth-weight infants. The incidence of NEC worldwide varies between 0.3 and 2.4 per 1,000 live births, with approximately 70% of cases occurring in premature infants born before the 36th gestational week. It affects 2-4% of premature infants and is responsible for about 8% of all neonatal intensive care admissions. Many factors contribute to the development of this disease, whose etiology and pathophysiology are not fully understood. The lack of a clear definition and specific findings related to the disease complicates the diagnostic process. Clinical, laboratory, and radiological findings are utilized during this process. NEC treatment includes supportive medical care and, in some cases, surgical intervention. Considering that the incidence of NEC cases has not declined, it continues to be one of the significant gastrointestinal problems in neonatal intensive care units, associated with high morbidity and mortality, a lack of specific findings for diagnosis, and many unclear factors regarding diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and care. Therefore, this section will discuss the risk factors, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention methods related to NEC in light of the literature.
