Multitemporal Shoreline Changes and Hydrological Drought Assessment of Lake Eğirdir (Türkiye) Using Satellite and UAV Data

Özet

Monitoring water level changes in inland lakes, which have many different areas of use, is extremely important for sustainable usage. Periodic fluctuations in water level changes also cause changes in the shoreline. These changes in the shoreline are also important for environmental research such as bathymetric maps, sediment depth, and water quality monitoring. Shoreline or water level changes that can be observed in different water reservoirs are generally obtained using digitized historical maps. However, today, UAVs and satellite images with different sensors are widely used to detect water level changes. In this study, high-resolution orthophotos created from November-2020 UAV images, Worldview-2 satellite images of October-2010, Landsat TM of 1987 and Landsat-9 OLI-2 satellite images of June-2023 were used to detect the temporal and spatial change of the surface area of Eğirdir Lake. In addition, temporal changes in the lake volume due to hydrological drought were analyzed using the Standardized Reservoir Supply Index (SRSI) method. According to the lake surface area data derived from satellite images using the NDWI and AWEI methods, the surface area of Lake Eğirdir decreased by approximately 12.2 km2 between 1987 and 2021. Furthermore, it was determined that the lake level dropped by 5.23 m over a 55-year period between 1962 and 2024. Accordingly, a reduction of about 67.53 km2 (13.75%) in the lake surface area and approximately 2.40354 BCM (57.47%) in the lake volume was identified. The results indicate that, particularly in recent years, hydrological drought has led to significant alterations in lake level, water volume, and surface area.
