Özet
The aim of this study is to investigate the suitability of bio-char and activated carbon as potential modifiers in order to improve the physical properties of asphalt binder. In this study, the performance of bio-char obtained from the pyrolysis of brewed waste tea in asphalt binder were examined for the first time. Bio-char which is used as a modifier, is the material obtained from the pyrolysis of brewed waste tea by using nitrogen gas for approximately 1 hour at 550 ˚C temperature. Activated carbon which has a size less than 75 microns and large surface area was also used as a modifier to compare the properties of asphalt binders modified with bio-char. Asphalt binder which has 50/70 penetration grade was modified with bio-char and activated carbon at the ratios of 0.5, 1, 2, 3 and 4% with the help of a high-speed mixer for 1 hour at 2000 rpm and 150˚C. In order to evaluate the performance of asphalt binder, penetration, softening point, penetration index (PI), rotational viscometer and storage stability tests were carried out all modified binders. According to the obtained results, the use of commercially activated carbon and bio-char obtained from pyrolysis of brewed waste tea as a modifier on asphalt binder showed that the stiffness of the modified asphalt binders increased and their storage at high temperature. In addition, the viscometer test results of asphalt binders modified with bio-char show that the bio-char material is agglomerated in the asphalt binder.
