Unmanned aerial vehicles are defined as systems that can fly without a pilot and can be managed remotely. UAV and UAV system are defined separately in the UAV Instructions of the General Directorate of Civil Aviation of Turkey (SHGM). Advances in unmanned aerial vehicle technologies have triggered the emergence of new terms describing these systems. 19th century It has been observed that UAVs have been used effectively in many battles in the period from the first air attack with hot air balloons, defined as UAVs, in the first half to the present day. UAV systems have a wide range of uses, including civil-commercial, military, twin-mission, research, scientific and developmental. The use of UAVs, especially in the military field, has played the biggest role in the development of UAV technologies. When the powerful armies in the world, especially NATO countries, are examined, it is seen that they have many and diverse UAV systems. In the study, classification approaches made by international institutions and organizations that are binding on many countries in terms of determining a common standard worldwide on UAVs were examined. These institutions and organizations; The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Turkish Civil Aviation General Directorate (SHGM). In the studies carried out by these institutions, it has been examined whether the classification factors and values are made according to which classification factors and whether they are inclusive in terms of all kinds of UAVs. It has been seen that the classification studies are more suitable for the UAV systems used in the civil-commercial field rather than the UAVs used in the military field. For this reason, a classification approach has been proposed for the UAV systems used in the military fields, in accordance with the mission these systems undertake in the battlefield and the unit levels performing this task. The proposed classification approach is based on NATO's UAV classification approach, which is the most widely used and accepted worldwide, and the classification parameters selected by considering the UAV systems in the Turkish Armed Forces inventory and the organizational structure used by the Air-Land-Navy Forces and battlefield effectiveness. was created. It was evaluated that this study contributed to the literature with the classification study, which is a first for UAVs used in the military field.
