Abstract

This study presents the conclusions of the thermodynamic analysis of a multi-generation energy system operating in two modes: solar and biomass mode. Energy and exergy efficiencies, exergy destruction rate, power and heat transfer rate, environmental impact assessment of the integrated system components and whole system are analysed for investigating irreversibility in all system components, system efficiency and potential CO2 reduction for sustainable development. The results show that energy and exergy efficiencies for solar mode are found as 51.32% and 46.75%, respectively, whereas for biomass mode energy and exergy efficiencies are calculated as 47.44% and 45.43%, respectively. Parametric studies are also conducted to understand the impacts of some significant design parameters, such as ambient temperature, solar radiation flux on the concentrating collector and mass flow rate of the biomass fuel, on the system performance, environmental effect, exergy destruction rate and exergy efficiency.
