Examination of God Perception through Belief in A Just World Theory and Concepts of Justice

Abstract

Lerner (1977) developed the notion of a belief in a just world as a mechanism by which people can live as they wish or endure negative events. Some concepts of religious belief are consistent with motivation to resist or challenge injustice and oppression. In addition, belief in a just world and religious belief and perception of God are seemed associated. The purpose of this study is to examine how the perception of God is explained with the events that happened to the heroes with different gender identity and sexual orientation of the story and its relation with the heroes through the concept of justice within the scope of the theory of belief in a just world. Within the scope of the study; God Perception Scale, General-Personal Belief in A Just World Scale, and belief in a just world stories created by the researcher were used as measures. Obtained data were analyzed through the path analysis conducted in the R Studio program. Results show that the perception of God as loving and forgiving is negatively related to positive thinking about story characters. As participants’ perception of injustice increased, the positive evaluation of the characters decreased and the story characters were accused.

Lerner (1977), kişilerin istedikleri şekilde yaşayabilecekleri ya da başlarına gelen olumsuz olaylara katlanabilecekleri bir mekanizma olarak adil dünya inancı kavramını geliştirmiştir. Bazı dini inanç kavramları, adaletsizliğe ve baskıya direnme ya da bunlara meydan okuma motivasyonu ile tutarlıdır. Bunların yanı sıra adil bir dünya inancı ile dini inanç ve tanrı algısı birbirleriyle ilişkili görünmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Tanrı algısının, farklı cinsiyet kimliği/cinsel yönelime sahip hikâye kahramanlarının başına gelen olaylarla ve bu hikâye kahramanlarıyla ilişkisinin, adil dünya inancı kuramı kapsamında adalet kavramı üzerinden nasıl açıklandığını incelemektir. Çalışma kapsamında veri toplama aracı olarak; Tanrı Algısı Ölçeği, Genel-Kişisel Adil Dünya İnancı Ölçeği ve araştırmacı tarafından oluşturulan adil dünya inancı hikayeleri kullanılmış ve çalışmada elde edilen veriler R Studio programında yapılan yol (path) analizi aracılığıyla incelenmiştir. Bulgular, Tanrı'nın sevgi dolu ve bağışlayıcı olarak algılanmasının, hikâye karakterleri hakkında olumlu düşünmeyle negatif ilişkili olduğunu göstermektedir. Katılımcıların adaletsizlik hissi arttıkça, karakterlerin olumlu değerlendirilmesi azalmakta ve hikâye karakterleri suçlanmaktadır.
