Insecticidal Activity of Natural and Synthetic Zeolites Against Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

This study evaluated the insecticidal potential of natural (More Than and The Base) and synthetic zeolites (3A, 4A, 5A) as eco-friendly alternatives to chemical insecticides for controlling the cowpea seed beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus
(Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Laboratory bioassays were conducted under controlled conditions (27± 2°C, 65± 5% RH) using various doses of each zeolite. Synthetic zeolites were applied at 25, 50, 75, 100, and 125mg per 8g of chickpeas,
and natural zeolites at 5, 10, 15, and 20mg. Each treatment included five replicates of 20 adult insects, and mortality was assessed over a 144-hour period. Among the synthetic zeolites, 3A (125mg) achieved 100% mortality within 72h, while
4A and 5A reached near-complete mortality (98–97%) by 96–120h. Natural zeolites caused complete mortality at all doses≥10mg within 24h, and even the lowest dose (5mg) achieved full mortality by 48h. Mortality increased significantly
with both dose and exposure time. In addition, all zeolite treatments suppressed egg hatchability, preventing F1 generation development. These results demonstrate that both natural and synthetic zeolites are effective against C. maculatus and may
serve as sustainable alternatives for managing stored-product pests.
