The scenes called mad scenes, which are prominent in the Italian opera repertoire, were used as a powerful means of expression in the 19th century, where conflict and emotional tension reached their peak both musically and dramatically. In these scenes, themes of love, betrayal, social pressure and mental breakdown were generally handled through female characters. With the virtuosity-based technical possibilities of the Bel Canto style, mental disorders and symptoms such as frenzy, psychosis and euphoria related to the psychological states of the characters were shown on stage. The aim of the study was to examine the mad scene in the opera Lucia di Lammermoor, composed by the Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti, from a dramatic and musical perspective. In addition, how the moments of psychological breakdown of the character Lucia were constructed in the mad scene and the function of this scene within the general dramatic structure of the work were questioned. In the collection of data, a literature review was conducted and the document analysis technique was used. Within the scope of the research, the concept of mad scene and its use in Romantic Period operas were primarily discussed. Then, information about Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor, which forms the basis of the opera, and the plot of the opera are given. It is explained how the plot was changed in line with dramatic requirements while adapting it to the opera. Then, the plot that leads to the psychological disintegration of the character Lucia and the dramatic climax she reaches in the mad scene are analyzed. It is stated that the scene, composed in the form of a grand aria, is structured in the recitative-cavatina-recitative-cabaletta order. The character’s mental illness forms the basis for the structure of the mad scene, representing not only an individual collapse but also a narrative element that enhances the dramatic effect of the opera. As a result, it is understood that Lucia’s mad scene not only enables the work to reach its dramatic climax by displaying the virtuosity of the coloratura voice, but also functions as an important element that strengthens the realism in the dramatic structure of the opera.
