The increases and decreases in the populations of settlements in Türkiye have occupied the country’s agenda in recent years to an unprecedented extent. Nevertheless, the tendencies mentioned have usually been analyzed through singular examples or with an overly superficial approach. The geographic distribution of the population and the forms of differentiation of existing patterns over time, however, first and foremost help us in understanding much wider socio-economic and spatial processes that settlements experience. This study analyzes the areal distribution of the population in the Marmara Region and the recent changes in the patterns in question at the level of the village and the neighborhood. It conducts this by referring to the relative positions of the villages and neighborhoods within the region in terms of their populations. Furthermore, the study utilizes the dasymetric mapping technique in order to minimize the risk of ecological fallacy and produce the representation most appropriate to the nature of the data. The findings underscore that the distribution of the population within the region presents a quite unequal pattern. In addition, they show that in large part, the population shares of neighborhoods where construction has reached saturation and the villages located in the west and southwest of the region have been receding. On the other hand, they reflect that the populations and population shares of some urban transformation fields, the Black Sea coastline, the peripheries of cities and closely neighboring villages have grown.
