Özet

The Caucasus occupies a distinctive place on the global geopolitical map, notable both for its rich history and for its strategic location. The protracted rivalry between the Russian Empire and Iran in particular demonstrates that the region constituted not merely a geographical but also a geopolitical point of intersection. The geopolitical history of the Caucasus presents a complex panorama in which the strategic interests of great powers converged and in which a wide variety of dynamics interacted with one another over the centuries. The Caucasus policies of the Russian Empire were shaped by a series of military and diplomatic manoeuvres that afforded Russia strategic depth in the region and determined the fate of the territory. Beginning in the middle of the eighteenth century, this process intensified above all during the reign of Empress Catherine II. The wars and diplomatic initiatives undertaken in order to consolidate Russian influence in the Caucasus rendered the Russian presence in the region permanent.
