Bioactive compounds of probiotics against cancer

Özet

Cancer is a leading cause of global mortality. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the standard treatment methods for cancer, yet both present significant side effects that can seriously impact patients' quality of life. As a result, researchers are increasingly interested in exploring alternative natural metabolites as potential cancer therapies. There has been a recent considerable rise in research highlighting the positive effects of probiotics and their bioactive compounds on human and animal health. Probiotics produce bioactive substances, including short-chain fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid, and can also eliminate procarcinogenic substances by producing anticarcinogenic compounds. Furthermore, these probiotic-derived compounds can activate immune-related cells in cancer patients and modulate the activity of specific cancer-associated genes by either promoting their activation or inhibition. Given these effects, probiotics are expected to emerge as a potential alternative to conventional cancer treatments. This review examines the role of bioactive compounds produced by probiotics in cancer therapy.
