Proje Özeti

Chemical and biological pollution of water become a major global problem today when most of countries suffer for water shortage. The problem has turned to be stronger as water sources can become the target for terrorist attack. For this reason water should be specially protected as the most valuable treasury. So far, we evaluated the case of removal the harmful inorganic species from irrigation and potable water (NATO-CLG 980131 and CLG-981422 grants). A new method of separation was investigated lately and it was shown some perspectives to apply adsorption-membrane filtration (AMF) hybrid process for water treatment. Now, the attention has been turned to organic species that can also contaminate water. In this project, five techniques will be investigated:

 

1)    Membrane extraction, ME, when organics are dissolved in specially prepared polymer membrane (direct analogy to membrane aromatic recovery systems, MARS developed at Imperial College, UK),

2)    Nanofiltration, NF, the process studied intensively at Suleyman Demirel University, Turkey

3)    Integrated catalytic membrane reactors, ICMR, when both processes of photo-catalytic reaction and membrane separation appear simultaneously is evaluated at A.V.Dumansky Institute of Colloid and Water Chemistry, Ukraine, 

4)    Stripping water process with using vapour organics high permeable membranes (SWVP) at A.V.Topchiev Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis, Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia

5)    Adsorption membrane filtration, SMF, combines sorption of organics on powdered active carbon and its separation on microfiltration membranes. The system is studied at Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland and at Ege University, Turkey.
